Some people do not know the difference between snoring and sleep apnea. The human body is built in many different forms. Heavier people tend to have more blocking tissues in the esophagus which constrict the air passageway. This blockage of the passageway can also be caused by a person who has a large soft palate. There are also other reasons that can cause snoring such as: large tonsils, a long tongue, big adenoids, a deviated nasal septum, and a tiny lower jaw. For these people, the likelihood of developing snoring problems is greatly increased.
Things like cigarettes and asthma can also increase the chances of having a snoring problem.
The way you position your body during the night is also a factor. When gravity pulls the tongue and jaw down to the back of the mouth due to sleeping on one’s back, the airway becomes limited and thus, can lead to snoring. Using aids like stop snoring mouthpieces can help.
